My boss is a bully now what - Your Career Intel

My boss is a bully now what - Your Career IntelHow do know your boss is a bully? Many people may experience a difficult boss or two during their career, but verbal abuse or a hostile work environment is what separates a challenging boss from a bullying boss. Its a difference you can feel, though it can be hard to come to terms with. Its even harder when abusive behavior is covert. A boss that fails to include you in meetings or changes your work process without reason or bedrngnisice is undermining your work and fostering resentment. A boss that constantly micromanages you could be a bully in disguisetreating you like a child and distracting you from your work. In extreme cases, a boss may talk openly about firing people, instilling fear in workers, who may wonder, am I going to be fired today? Here are 5 strategies for identifying a bully boss and figuring out what to do next1. Assess how your boss is affecting your environment. If you have a tyrant for a boss, its likely that he or sh e may also be mistreating your peers. Such behavior can create high turnover, which is schwimmbad for the company. But the greater danger to you is accepting the abuse as normal, which can affect more than your workyour personal life may suffer as well. Its better to find other employment rather than allow family and friends to bear that burden.2. Tread lightly and try the quiet approach at work.A boss whos a bully may well retaliate if you present yourself as an opponent. You might try staying out of his or her way to see if the behavior changes. Refrain from complaining to your peers, as you may not truly know who at the office is your friend. If you and your coworkers do talk about your boss, it should only be to recognize problems and make adjustments. Never go up the chain of command with complaints, which could get you fired (especially if your bosss superior hired your boss).3. Take the three strikes approachand emphasize productivity. When you are ready to talk to your boss, understand that you are beginning a process of setting limits you can live with and from which you wont back down. I suggest a three strikes approach of giving your boss opportunities for change. From the first conversation, you should be respectful and frame the situation in terms of productivity tell your boss that certain behaviors are affecting your work production, and quite possibly your financial situation. The next time you bring up the problem (strike two) you can be more assertive about the specific things that need to stop so you can be more productive. Spell out the situation and the changes youd like to see, and put it in writing. Email is a good option (be sure to BCC yourself so you have a copy to save). If you hit strike three, its probably time to look elsewhere.4. Get your resume ready and contact a recruiter. If you are ready for a different job, especially if you live in a place where the market is good, you can let a recruiter know. As a recruiter, I can assure yo u that your work situation is not uncommon. Recruiters have heard, I hate my boss, from job seekers many times over as a primary reason for wanting to change jobs. They will not ask many questions about it.5. Think before filing a complaint against your boss. This approach should be a last resort. While talking to HR might seem like a good recourse at first, and perhaps at certain companies it is, filing a complaint against a bully boss would be the last thing Id encourage doing. It throws up a big red flag as to your unhappiness and may create more problems than it fixes. Instead, Id encourage you to get your resume together if youre unhappy, and go out and find something better.Whatever the approach you take, try to think of your experience as a learning opportunity that hopefully will find you in a much a better work situationone where you dont have a bully for a boss.

How did you get to where you are now?Frankly, by accident I started the business with a small goal in mind of being able to quit my real job and ansturm a baby brand full time, thinking Id have more free time to spend with my then not-even-born-yet first baby. Everything since then that I have achieved has been icing on the cake. Truthfully, most of the journey has been about refusing to quit. I couldnt wrap my head around the idea of going to work for someone else anymore, so I had to just keep my head down and work hard. What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?Our entire team is remote we span 7 different states and work in all 3 time zones, yet we manage to run a multi-million dollar business via text message. Because a flexible schedule was what really made me to want to run my own business in the first place, I love that our team can work from home and have that same flexibility. Its not often that anyone who works for JJ has to choose between school pick-up or working. What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome?Ha See above our entire team is remote we span 7 different states and work in all 3 time zones. As the company has scaled, it has been difficult to coordinate phone calls and brainstorming sessions, but it has been especially difficult to recognize who is overworked or underworked , who can bring more to the table with their skill set, etc. Right now, we have really got a great system set up and things are so smooth for the first time in foreverWho is YOUR Fairygodboss? and Why?I really love and admire Jeni Britton Bauer, the founder of Jenis Ice Creams. The empire she has built by doing things her own way is just incredible. I love that she is so passionate about her brand and how clear their vision is. Plus, I just really love her ice cream. If you could have dinner with one famous persondead or alivewho would it be?Larry David. I could only assume that would be enough entertainment to last a lifetime.Lightning Round What is your go-to karaoke song?Bohemian RhapsodyLightning Round What is your favorite movie?Home AloneLightning Round What book would you bring with you on a desert island?Bossy Pants by Tina FeyLightning Round What is your shopping vice? What would you buy if you won the lottery?Expensive, artisanal nut butters. No, Im not kidding. Ive spent a small fortune on them. What is the 1 career tip youd like to share with other women who want to have successful careers like you?Ive noticed a lot of women have a tendency to dumb themselves down, sell themselves short and straight up deny their successes, achievements and how bad-ass they really are (myself included, I cant tell you how many times I have told a vendor or partner I have no clue what Im doing). There seems to be an idea among women that if we praise and celebrate ourselves that we are conceded or self absorbed or some other nonsense. So, I guess my advice would be to knock it the heck off. Be proud of yourself. Why do you love where you work?Im an only child and basically was born bossy. I love being in charge. Beyond that, I love the women we work with, and we have amazing customersFairygodboss is all about women helping other women - so each week, we celebrate a woman who made a difference in another womans career.
